It is not that remarkable that in a hotel you choose which drink you want, which dish or which room. But that at some hotels you can also choose which pillow you want to sleep on is less well known. Fortunately, we are here to explain which options are on the menu and which one best suits your sleeping position. Handy for when you soon face that luxurious choice. And afterwards: stock up for your own bedroom.Â
The pillow menu
A word about that menu, and the different pillows. Although most people get no further than ‘square’ or ‘rectangular’ when describing theirs, a pillow menu consists of five and sometimes as many as sixteen different pillows. Each with its own shape, resilience and effect. One is filled with buckwheat, another has a resilient centre against neck complaints and yet another is filled with lavender to help you relax better.
You see: when it comes to ‘less is more’, it is not about pillows. Fortunately, because it is precisely that abundance of pillows that gives your hotel stay the ultimate luxury, five-star feeling you are looking for.Â
The standard
A hotel bed is therefore made up as standard with two to four down pillows and two microfibre pillows, supplemented with two body or reading pillows. Lovely, we hear you think, but there is more. Hotel pillows are different from the pillows most people have on their bed at home anyway. Hotel pillows are wider, for one thing: as standard 90cm, or even a metre wide.
This is not only a treat for the eye (because in that bed-wide abundance of pillows you want to sink straight in), but also for the body. With their relatively low height of 50 centimetres, these pillows offer, besides comfort, support where it is needed. The distribution of the filling in these hotel pillows ensures that your neck is supported in the right place.Â
Hotel pillow
Just think about it tonight, when you get into bed and take another critical look at your pillow. Your head actually only covers a small part of that fairly large surface. Do you need all that height? And then think of a hotel pillow, whose length can never be long enough for you (and so it isn’t) and whose height is just high enough. That way, every time you turn over, you get that ultimate luxury feeling of a fresh, unslept-on pillow.Â
And now perhaps the best part: for that feeling you don’t even necessarily have to leave the house. Because you can simply bring this five-star hotel luxury into your home. You do need to know which pillow, though. The options:
Help, which pillow do I choose?
As we just said: in a hotel you can sometimes choose from as many as sixteen pillows. Which pillow suits you best? Before we look at your sleeping position, we want to make a case for the hotel pillow. Or even better: as far as we are concerned, the hotel pillow becomes the new standard. Why? We will set it out for you once more. Want to get to the right choice quickly? Then take the Pillow Quiz!Â
Silly, of course, but there is a serious amount to be said for it. First of all: the standard Dutch pillow of 60x70 cm is actually too narrow to make the bed look beautiful. At 90 or 100 centimetres, hotel pillows are a lot wider than ‘ordinary’ pillows and so fill the whole width of your bed. They are not only lovely to sleep on, they also look very good - it is no coincidence that this, together with a good mattress, gives you that ultimate luxury hotel feeling.
And then that height. What extra comfort does it bring?Â
Well, none. Because when you lay your head on a standard pillow, it sinks in at the bottom and the filling moves upwards - to a height you don’t need at all. Moreover, the hollow of your neck is then not supported. Hotel pillows do support it, because with a height of 50 centimetres the filling has nowhere to go and so stays exactly where you want it: in your neck. What more could you want - apart from a hotel pillow right now?
Now that you know you want a hotel pillow, it is also useful to know whether that pillow suits you best. And that depends on your sleeping position:
I’m a side sleeper
For side sleepers, a pillow that is medium to firm/extra firm is the most suitable. The choice you make next is the filling. Do you go for synthetic, which generally feels firmer and gives more resilience, or do you choose a natural filling of down and feathers, which gives softer support? Extra support is also possible; in that case choose firm or extra firm.
I’m a back sleeper
If you are a back sleeper, you’re in luck, because that is by far the best position for your back and neck. For a nice straight line of your back and neck we recommend a medium or firm pillow, such as… our hotel size of 50x90 cm. You have just read all about it. A smaller pillow, a better balance of the filling, and: it looks smarter.Â
Here too you can choose a synthetic or natural filling, where the synthetic version feels firmer and gives a little more resilience. In that case choose medium. A filling of feathers and down is more breathable and gives softer support - in that case choose firm.
I’m a stomach sleeper
A small drawback of sleeping on your stomach: your neck is always turned - and that is not so good for your body. We even recommend sleeping without a pillow or, if you do want one, on as soft a pillow as possible. We have several types of soft pillows to choose from. A soft filling of feathers and down gives the softest support.
