What is a pocket spring mattress?

A pocket spring mattress is a mattress with ‘pockets’ made of metal coil springs, each individually wrapped so that they form separate compartments. Each spring can move independently, which provides high conformity; each spring adjusts to your body, so the mattress ensures that certain parts of the body are given extra support. The pocket that encases the springs gives the springs enough room and stops them from bumping into each other; in addition, each pocket is enclosed by a foam edge so that the pocket springs are held together.

How soft or firm the mattress is, is determined by the thickness of the steel and how many turns the steel has. The thicker the wire, the less the spring moves and so the firmer the mattress is. This also makes it easy to vary the firmness, to serve the body optimally and not to put unnecessary strain on the body’s vulnerable areas. 

Pocket spring mattresses come in different types and with different numbers of springs. During your search for a pocket spring mattress you may come across numbers such as 300 or 500. These numbers indicate the number of springs per square metre. DOUXE pocket spring mattresses are available with 300 to 700 springs per square metre. The more springs per square metre, the better your body weight is distributed over the whole mattress. In other words: the more springs, the better the sleeping comfort.

What are the sizes and thicknesses of DOUXE pocket spring mattresses?

At DOUXE all mattresses are available in all standard sizes. In addition, on request we make mattresses made to measure. The minimum thickness we offer is that of our upholstered Mainport mattress: 22 cm, but the other mattresses in the DOUXE range vary in thickness from 25 cm to 30 cm.

Which firmness should I choose?

The right firmness is one of the most important aspects when choosing a mattress. Whether the firmness suits you depends on your weight, height and how you lie when you sleep. In general, it is better to choose a slightly firmer mattress rather than a softer one.

Under 65 kg, a soft mattress will suit you best. At a weight of 60-90 kg, a medium-soft firmness, and at 80-110 kg a medium or medium-firm. For people weighing more than 110 kg we recommend a firm mattress. In addition to weight, it is important to take sleeping position into account. A stomach sleeper will benefit from a firmer mattress and a side sleeper needs a softer mattress. At the end of the day, sleeping remains a very personal matter, so we especially recommend testing the different firmness levels in our DOUXE showroom to make the best choice.

What do the zones in pocket spring mattresses mean and why are there comfort zones?

A comfort zone in a mattress is a part of the mattress that encompasses several pockets which together provide firmer or softer pressure. There is, for example, a shoulder zone and a hip zone. 

A comfort zone provides variety in the resilience of the foam and the pocket springs. At shoulder and hip height, for example, a mattress has to sink in further for side sleepers. The starting point is that the spine comes to rest in as natural a position as possible. In short: stepping out of your comfort zone is of course a good resolution for some things, but with sleeping it is important to know what lies well, so that you wake up fully rested and your body enjoys optimal support. 

How many comfort zones should my pocket spring mattress have?

There are mattresses with 5, 7 or 9 comfort zones. Each type has a number of zones that support certain parts of the body

5-zone mattress: a 5-zone mattress focuses mainly on the comfort of the body at the head and neck, the shoulders and the hips. This mattress is suitable for every sleeping position.

7-zone mattress: this mattress is recommended if you have back problems. With a 7-zone mattress the body gets optimal support and you experience virtually no counter-pressure in your back. Because the comfort zones ensure a straight posture of the spine, your back also gets sufficient opportunity to recover during the night. As an extra comfort zone, 7-zone mattresses have the waist of your body.

Comfort zones: extra important for side sleepers 

It is also important to take into account what your favourite sleeping position is. How you lie has a great influence on how well you lie. Side sleepers in particular benefit from a high number of comfort zones. The shoulder zone is an important part of the mattress for side sleepers. The shoulder must be able to sink in further than, for example, the side itself. Only in this way can your spine maintain a natural, straight shape. Ultimately, the aim is always to get your spine into position in a straight way.

What is the best top layer for a pocket mattress? 

The top layers of a pocket mattress are very important. They make sure that only the princess from The Princess and the Pea would feel the metal springs. In addition, the top layers must not feel warm, must absorb moisture well and must not lose volume quickly. The top layers have a direct effect on the comfort of the mattress and also on its lifespan. 

Cold foam top layer: Cold foam (with a high HR value) is one of the best materials to use as a top layer. Cold foam is resilient, ventilates well and keeps its shape. Super durable with minimal loss of volume.

Latex top layer: A latex top layer is exceptionally comfortable. Latex has the property that it moulds easily to the body and, on top of the pocket springs, offers extra support for the body’s pressure points. Some people find latex warm, in which case it is advisable to add a mattress topper of cold foam or a naturally ventilating material such as wool.
