What is a mattress topper for?Â
Nothing comes close to the experience of sleeping in a five-star hotel bed like sleeping in a bed with a down and feather mattress topper on top of the mattress. To this day, this luxurious addition remains one of the best-kept secrets of five-star hotels. These hotels add a Featherbed to amaze guests with an incredibly soft bed that leads to an exceptionally good night’s sleep. The evenly distributed feathers and down provide exactly the right support and comfort, giving you the feeling of floating; a feeling best compared to sleeping on a cloud.
Featherbeds have been around for centuries. In the past they were a luxury item reserved for the wealthy. A proud possession that was kept and cherished in the family for generations. Fortunately, times have changed, and anyone who prefers a soft, indulgent sleeping experience can now own one themselves.
Which Featherbed is the best match for me?Â
- The Comfort Featherbed has a filling of 95% feathers and 5% down. If you are looking for a Featherbed that feels the same as the ones in a hotel, we dare say this is the composition you are looking for. But before you make your decision, you must be prepared to take care of this mattress topper; after all, it is the best that nature has to offer, and that requires attention. The Comfort Featherbed, in other words the hotel model, has to be fluffed regularly to stay in good condition and to prevent the feathers from clumping together. Remember that hotel beds are made and fluffed every day by housekeeping. If making an art of making your bed every other day is not your cup of tea, make it a little easier for yourself and choose the Original or the Prestige Featherbed.
- The Original Featherbed/Conservatorium Hotel Topper has a filling of 70% feathers and 30% down. The extra down in the filling creates luxurious comfort and extra softness. This Featherbed is more user-friendly for home use, because it only needs to be fluffed once a week to keep its cloudlike composition. The thicker, denser ticking prevents the feathers from poking through.
- The Prestige Featherbed sounds so luxurious for a good reason. With a filling of 50% feathers and 50% down, it provides extra soft and supportive comfort on top of your mattress. If you want to choose between the Original and the Prestige, it is good to know that the Prestige Featherbed is 5 cm thick and the Original Featherbed 10 cm thick. Do you really want to imitate the feeling of sinking into a cloud? Then choose the Original. Or do you simply want a luxurious, ultra-soft layer on the mattress that is not too prominent but makes a noticeable difference? Then choose the Prestige.
- The Fiberbed/Okura Fiberbed has a filling of synthetic material. Enjoy the same comfort as a featherbed with feathers and down, but with the soft, synthetic, allergy-free filling. A unique combination of synthetic microfibres that offers the same comfort as a Featherbed, without the problems of allergies.
DOUXE Featherbeds are available in many different sizes, from 80x200cm to 210x210cm. First check which size mattress you have, so that you can choose the size of Featherbed accordingly.
How do I look after my valuable possession?
Let’s be honest: beautiful things of excellent quality sometimes need a little extra care. This is the case with feather and down mattresses. If you look after them well, a feather and down mattress offers the best and longest-lasting sleeping experience. It is not for nothing that luxury hotel chains such as Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and the SO hotels put a Featherbed on their beds for the ultimate, luxurious sleeping experience for their guests. Read on to find out how, once you have put it together, you can keep your perfect nest soft and snug.
As with any product filled with feathers and down, Featherbeds need to be fluffed regularly to stay in good condition. In hotels, housekeeping makes sure every day that the beds are made and that the Featherbeds are thoroughly fluffed and turned to retain their lushness. So make a habit of doing this every so often. Put on some nice music and fluff the Featherbed, and loosen up yourself a little too.
How do I protect my mattress topper?
The most important thing is to make sure you protect the mattress! Pillow and mattress protectors extend the life of your bed products and keep out unwanted things such as house dust mites and dirt. This applies to the mattress, but also to pillows. The quills at the end of the feathers can sometimes poke through the fabric under our body weight, or cling to the mattress through friction. You will never be able to completely prevent feathers from coming through the fabric, but you can certainly limit it with a Featherbed protector. This is a special cotton cover with a zip, which looks like a duvet cover and goes around the Featherbed. The cover ensures there is no more friction between the Featherbed and the mattress.
Air your mattressÂ
Something else you can do to make sure allergens do not build up is to air your bed, and so the mattress, regularly. Fold back the duvet. The fresh air and direct sunlight help to dry the mattress and let odours escape. House dust mites then have no chance. Even better is to hang the Featherbed outside from time to time on a lovely spring day.
The Featherbed does not fit in a standard household washing machine. Of course you can have the Featherbed washed professionally. But don’t do this too often. Water and soap can strip the natural oils from the feathers and down and cause the feathers to break. This is another reason to use mattress and pillow protectors. You can wash protectors as often as you like and so keep your down products fresh and clean, without really exposing them to wear from water and soap. Â
What are the advantages of a Featherbed?
We recommend making up the Featherbed (with protector cover) together with the mattress. A fitted molton and a fitted sheet then go around the mattress and Featherbed. This creates a nicely domed top layer on the mattress and ensures the Featherbed does not slip.
If you have an upholstered mattress, we recommend adding a thin cold foam topper under the Featherbed, so that you can make up the Featherbed together with the topper. This ensures the Featherbed can be made up tightly and does not slip.
In short: give yourself that little bit extra and slip into bed with our Featherbed mattress topper. We guarantee a soft, snug sleeping experience like no other and are happy to help you on your way to this experience.
What is the difference between a Featherbed and memory foam?
The big difference between a Featherbed and memory foam is that a Featherbed has a natural filling of feathers and down. Memory foam, also known as slow-recovery foam or visco-elastic foam, is made of polyurethane. That is a rubber-like plastic. A synthetic filling. The natural filling ventilates better than a synthetic filling, so it feels less warm.
Memory foam has the property of moulding to the body and sinking in at the places where the centre of gravity lies. One of the main reasons to buy a memory foam mattress is when you suffer from back or joint pain. Then you can certainly benefit from it. Feathers and down can also be soothing for these parts of the body, but convey this less strongly. The Featherbed as a whole serves as a soft underlayer and is not there in the first place to relieve medical complaints.
